Bestfriends: Your sisters from another mother in other words

Today, I sat and just took a second to sit and do nothing and two of my closest friends (my best friends) popped in my head.

As a wife, mom, student, worker I often grow busy and take for granted how much they mean to me and the sanity, love, advice, hugs, and many other countless things they provide my life and someone that can not possibly to be quantified.

So this post is dedicated to them thanking them for what they have done for me:

First in dedication to Jaime:

You are one of my oldest friends, you were in my wedding, you and I are were destined to be from the moment we met. I have memories upon memories with you that make me smile every time I think of them. Six flags, Chinese pick up on the side of the road, boob padding, hugs, a shoulder to cry on, a person that loves me despite my many shortcomings, a person that has never judged me, and a friend who I can count on any day of the week. Our long talks about our spiritual lives and boys and children and school. There may be breaks in our closeness, but I know that if I called you at 3 am you would be there and I wouldn't have to apologize or explain or even worry about it...you would just be there.

You are amazing and meant for so much in this world.                                                                You are an amazing daughter, wife, sister, friend. You touch people and you are special. I love you and hope that we spend our many years on this earth building our memories together!

Second one is to Allison:

You are technically a new friend, but yet I should have known you from birth! These past two years have been so rough for me in many ways and I made it through a lot because of you. Your love, and judge-less advice and ears have been life savers for me. You have talked me through sickness, work, school, marriage, friendship, family, and just plain fun stuff. We joke all the time that we will be old girls sitting in a rocking chair and I know we will!
Coming from our favorite show: You are my person, my sister.
You know me so well, sometimes a little too well :) We laugh, and I have cried, and you are just amazing.
You treat my kids like they are your own and spoil them like you're their aunt. I love you and I love your family and I pray that we never go a day without talking.

You are an amazing human being, wife, teacher, friend ,and you can do anything you want to do. You have touched and will continue to touch people because you are that special.

I am so thankful that God chose to cross our paths and look forward to the rest of our lives!

Life with Pain

Today's blog post is something that I don't necessarily talk about that often. Why? Because it is something that can cause shame and guilt and make me feel like a burden to other people. What can cause that? Chronic Pain.

People who live in chronic pain or with a chronic illness get labeled as dramatic, drug seekers, weak, sometimes even hypochondriacs, and so much more. I have heard the gamut, from people I love and people I barely know a like.

I have multiple family members that also suffer from chronic pain and chronic illnesses and diseases. They range from fibromyalgia, thyroid disorders, headaches/migraines, arthritis, diabetes, and to the more serious things like my dad and aunt's cystic fibrosis.

Sometimes people say the wrong things or assume the wrong things.

My cousin, Shannon, is one of the strongest people I know. She lives in pain, daily, and when your with her she laughs and jokes and has such a big heart and such a good attitude despite the fact that hugging her is literally one of the most painful things you can do to her.

Just because someone smiles and laughs and doesn't tell you every time their hurting, doesn't mean it magically went away. It means they are trying to not be a miserable person and they are trying to be strong, so people don't feel sorry for them or so people don't get annoyed by them. Chronic pain like cysts, fibromyalgia,  arthritis, stomach pain, and headaches are invisible. If you ask me how I am feeling I will probably tell you that I am tired, Every time. I am. It is taxing on a body to experience pain so frequently, both emotionally and physically. It is emotionally draining when you have to go the doctor yet again or even worse, the hospital. It is not wanted or appreciated or liked, it sucks. It can be depressing and a source of great worry and guilt on the sufferer and it is extremely rigorous and challenging on the care giver.

I am not looking for pity or anything of that nature, I know that there is a light at the end of my tunnel. I have family members who probably don't necessarily have that light.

I guess I just want to remind people that chronic pain is a thing and just because there is no cough, sneeze, or they don't lay around in bed, doesn't mean that some days every step they take is difficult and some days they give everything to show up to something and be present. When they hear someone doubt their words or doubt their pain or their condition it hurts them deeply and can cause great guilt.

Do encourage them and when they are having a good day don't say, oh it must be getting better, just enjoy the day with them. When they are having a bad day, be compassionate on them and don't blow it off because it happens so often. Love on them the way they need it and be a light and a source of joy and encouragement to them.

Love,
Sam

When the Devil tells us We're Unworthy

My day always starts out kind of crazy....

A screaming toddler, two hungry boys, and then the thoughts that bounce around my head like bumper cars...

Those thoughts usually go something like this: What are my plans today? Oh yeah I gotta go here or there....I wonder how much school I planned for the boys today ( yes I actually forget most of the time)...Oh yeah..food.

But today the first thing I heard in my head caused a little break in my soul and it sounded something like this:

Who do you think you are, you are not a good mother, send them to school...your husband thinks you're the worst wife...your family thinks your a burden and bother why even try...you will never be good enough you should just go back to bed...

Do these thoughts sound familiar to anyone else? I hope not, because these are dark thoughts and they are not the thoughts that the Holy Spirit is sending you...they come from the father of lies. I struggle with these thoughts way more than I would ever care to admit to anyone, isn't it ironic that the thoughts that make us feel ashamed cause us further shame and guilt for feeling them...guilt and shame are a vicious cycle.

After I ran through them a couple of times...I stopped and I closed my eyes and just screamed in my head...NOT TODAY! Not to necessarily stop them, but it was more thing that I was thinking about and I don't have time to feel these things...

See just like so many women and girls and even men I know struggle with those words

Not Good Enough.

Unaccepted.

Undesirable.

Unworthy.

but then I heard it..the small still voice

Sweet girl, I know it's tough and I know life has been hard. People have let you down and made you feel less than, people you trust have made you feel ashamed for things out of your control

I promise you there is a plan and a purpose, I promise you that I have you in my hands and I hold you in my arms

You are my daughter, a princess, and I created you in my image... I forgave you for your past already, you need to forgive yourself and realize that you don't have to live with your head down or in fear of disappointing people, if they see you through my eyes they will love you just the way your are

I know that this life has not and is not easy, just hold on...

See the word of God says different

You are his beloved.

You are desired by the God of the Heavens.
.
Jesus took your shame and guilt with the cross.

He loves you.

In comparison to all of this, what does the world have to offer but guilt, shame, lies....

In Light of his love and sacrifice all these thoughts fade away.

So next time you hear Satan screaming in your head everything that is wrong with you...whisper back (or scream from the top of your lungs)...you hold no power over me...God's word is true and sharper than a double-edged sword and he says this about me...

For you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body -1 Cor. 6:20

The LORD will fulfill his purpoes for me; your steadfast love, oh LORD endures forever - Psalm 138:8

There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus- Romans 8:1

You knit me together in my mother's womb; I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:13-14

I can do all things through him who gives me strength- Philippians 4:13

I have died, but Christ lives in me. And I now live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave his life for me- Galations 2:20

Since you are honored and precious in my sight and because I love you, I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for your life. -Isaiah 43:4

Women of Judgement

A few days ago, for what seems like the thousandth time, someone commented about the amount of children I have (it's only three, which by my friends standards is actually not that many). I get one of three questions/comments: 1) Oh you have a handful, bless your heart (in southern terms that is not really a compliment)...2) Are you going to have anymore? (my answer: no, but not by choice, my uterus gave up on me!) 3) You look too young to have kids (yes I am technically a little young, but when and who decided the right age to have kids)...

I only bring this up, because my heart hurts for the women of our day. We never encourage or lift up or build the woman around us. We only criticize and second guess them and chastise them for not doing things in order, or on time, or for procreating "too much". We criticize each other for working, for homeschooling, for staying home, for needing a break, for not taking a break, for our weight, for not going to school, for being selfish and finishing school, for being too perfect and cooking all the time, or never cooking at all, for getting married young and or for getting married too late or not getting married at all. We get criticized for having children or not having them. We blame the media and the current state of technology and communication for all of this, but those are just excuses:

TRUTH:  All of these criticisms come from other women directed towards women. We do it without thinking and without regard for what others are facing. We are the ones that emphasize weight and body image, marriage, childbearing, education, etc. If you do it in an encouraging way, it's okay, but lets face it, most of the time we are throwing out judgement.

BUT what if we made a promise to only say encouraging things to other women. To make sure they know that someone is there and with them and that they are not alone. That the decisions they are making for their families and themselves are not bad simply because we would not make the same decision. If someone is making a detrimental decision there are ways to talk to them without making them feel like a failure. Could you imagine if every women heard they were beautiful and that their lives had value regardless of their circumstances, decisions, past, their size every day, how something so simple would transform our world. Little girls would grow up encouraged and feeling of value.

If we raise women of virtue and help to encourage the women around us, this is what the bible says of women of virtue:

For her worth is far above rubies -Proverbs 31:10

If the girls and women around us become women who know who they are and women who are encouraged and lifted up and built up by Christ and by the women around them, then our world becomes full of strong, graceful women whom nurture and love and give to those around them. Our communities, schools, families, marriages, churches become dramatically different!

Looking Forward to the Week

So needless to say this holiday season has been CRAZY!

4 Stomach Bugs resulting in missed Christmas
4 Family Christmases
Kidney Infection to ring in the new year.
Hysterectomy Recovery and Pulmonary Embolism recovery to bring in Thanksgiving

A wild and crazy 1 year old to keep things interesting, a whiny five year old who is going through a phase of not wanting to eat, and a bossy seven year old...

No, I really do love my children #mostdays.

On the bright side, Mike and I are venturing into the journey of actually committing to a budget, my kids in their own words, had the "best Christmas ever!", Michael was blessed beyond imagination with a nice bonus from work, we got to spend a lot of time together (even though we were sick), and I have had plenty of time to reflect on this year.

It has been full of UPs and downs!

I left one job for another, got laid off from that job in unfortunate circumstances, I started the insane journey homeschool (and successfully survived the semester), we celebrated our children's 1st, 5th, and 7th (NOT OKAY) birthdays, and I completed another 15 hours of graduate school.

Emily has grown so much this year, she is in 2t-3t clothes (She's sooo tall!), she talks, and jumps, and dances. This is one of my favorite times in children's lives. They just change and grown and are so much fun to watch.

Caleb has made huge strides in his speech and in school. We couldn't be prouder!

Jeremiah had a year full of mostly baseball, of which he loves and is so good at. He has become such a responsible, chill, sweet, affectionate young boy. I can't believe my original is grown so much and matured so much!

This year despite all the craziness has really been a year of revalations for me. I found my sister from another mother in Allison and have just been so blessed by that relationship and am a better person because of her and I formed a friendship with all of these ladies from church and couldn't have made it without them. We have prayed, laughed, cried, cheered, sung, and even cooked for each other. Their support has been amazing.

God has blessed my family and I immensely this year. I am excited to see what next year holds!

Next Week,
We go back to routine with school for both me and the boys and back to the daily grind. I am actually looking forward to daily routine to come back into play.

My meal plan for this week:
Tonight: Burgers
Friday:White Bean Turkey Chili
Saturday: Crockpot Seafood Paella
Sunday: Lemon Garlic Tilapia with Brown Rice and Asparagus
Monday: Herb Chicken Skillet with brown rice, spinach salad, and corn
Tuesday: Slow Cooker Chicken Parmesean
Wednesday: TACO NIGHT!!
Thursday: Black Bean Chicken Soup

I have class this week on Tuesdays and Thursdays
First Sunday of the year at church
We have baseball lessons tomorrow and one day next week

It should be a fun week!

Hope all have been blessed with a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Connection

Our society is ruled by the next big tweet or controversial Facebook post. The news media extend and amplify tragedies for their own gain while the ones who actually live those tragedies are left to fumble through the mess that their lives have become. Even in our little town and group of "friends" we have become victims of shallow connections and fear of face to face talking; especially fear of talking involving hard conversations or truth or any amount of real connection.

We believe we have all these friends because we stalk and judge their posts and photos and for a moment feel like we were there with them in that moment, but in reality other than knowing general factual data like who they are married to, where they work, or what the names of people in their families are we don't really know them. We don't know what they struggle with, what their proud of, what their daily lives are like when the camera is not on them or they are not masking their feelings with posts aimed at making sure they look their best to people who don't actually know them or care to get to know them. There are exceptions to this as we all have those few people that we talk to outside of social media and use social media to contact them in case of phone issues or quick contact.  However, if you went down your list of friends how many have you actually had a "real"  connecting conversation to their face with that wasn't gossip, small talk, or passing by talk as I like to call it? How many friends do you see that you can tell me their state right now? Are they struggling , are they experiencing a new stage in life? Are they working on a new dream or trying to build one?

We have created a world where we see someone we occasionally interact with online and ask "How are you?" hoping they say I am fine how are you in return so you can continue to walk by and not have to interact.

It's a wonder that the upcoming generation can't talk their problems out or forgive each other or state their opinion without the whole world vilifying them.  They live in a society that they have to walk on eggshells because the truth, while not meaning to be personal is taken personally, and people become offended by the smallest words.

I by no means am perfect, I open my mouth way to much and impulsively think before I speak. I have my own set of grudges and hurts that are partly a result of this.

Our new way of telling someone they have hurt our feelings is to simply ignore them completely and just sit in our anger or to defriend them on Facebook just to make sure they know your mad, but never giving them the time of day to talk it out. Not everything can be worked out, but not even trying has become the norm. The opposite reaction and it seems the only other one is to blast them on social media so the whole world knows your private problems and interactions and can then join in on the vilifying and the blasting and the cruelty that our "opinions" become.

We have such a high rate of suicide because of loneliness and bullying and opinionated people with a lot to say online but nothing to offer in person. Have you wondered if the person you ignored or chose not to talk to or blasted on Facebook or liked a negative comment about them if maybe that was their last straw? Or when you get on public forums and strip someone down and make them out to be a monster because they made a mistake or did one thing wrong (like we are all perfect and never do anything wrong), does it make everyone feel better, you feel better? Sure there are people that applaud your honesty, but would you vilify people to this degree in person?

This inability to have face to face, real conversations is prohibiting the world from connecting and society from being completely prosperous. We live our days watching and waiting  to see whether or not someone likes our status or talks to us or comments or says something bad. If a person doesn't post a status sometimes we forget they even exist until we see them in Walmart and try our best to have the shortest conversation possible.

It's a sad reality that has created a generation and society that has lost the meaning of love and trust and connection. We destroy our Christian testimonies without realizing and turn people away from God without even blinking. Sometimes even the person you dislike or hold a grudge against really needs you to just smile at them or forgive them or just not vilify them and make them out to be the most horrible human being to ever had walked the planet.

Me personally I am having to learn how to truly connect, to let the people who don't really want to connect fall by the wayside and find people who can have a real relationship where one mistake doesn't end the relationship, but in the end can make it stronger. I have to learn to pick and choose I associate with and try to form connections with even more delicately then ever before. It seems harsh, but connecting with 1,000 people on Facebook or 50 at the ballpark or 100 at church only leaves you feeling more lonely then before, because those connections end the minute one person becomes offended or the wrong words are said or there is miscommunication or a lack of communication at all. Mostly because I have allowed these false "connections", friends", and "relationships" rule my perception of love and friendship and therefore destroyed my ability to believe that people can be honest or real or forgiving or loving and in turn my perception of my relationship with my Savior. I live with my walls up either craving false attention or shutting people out.

Christ called us to live abundantly and abundantly means without constant fear of offense or abandonment and with my walls down open to receive and give agape love that doesn't judge someone by their actions or their mistakes or the quirks, but that loves because that person exists and no matter the condition of ones soul or mind or heart they deserve love too.
